NT4 SP4 and below have the limitation that they can not boot if the system root is on a partition that is LOCATED above 4 GB - no matter what size the partition or the file system used.

SP5 fixed this, but NT has to running to apply a service pack, And MS doesn't address this during setup up.
When installing NT, the machine reboots after the DOS portion of setup, NT OS Loader kicks in, but can't find the system root because it is more than 4 GB into the disk.
SOLUTION:
After DOS portion of setup, before booting to GUI portion of setup, boot to a start-up disk, and replace the 'ntldr' and 'ntdetect.com' files with the SP5 versions. Reboot, and continue setup with the GUI portion.
