I have a Dell Dimension computer with xp SP3. I inadvertantly opened an e-mail from "CNN" which gave me a trojan. I managed to clear it with my McAfee protection, however it has left a notice in my desk top which says "warning spyware detected on your computer install an antivirus or spyware remover to clean your computer." I cannot remove this notice. Can you help? The trojan seems to have stopped my system restore points before today, so I cannot use that.
Where is the notice?

What exactly does the notice look like? Perhaps you can explain or upload a screen shot.
Can you check and perhaps change your desktop settings?
Another way to approach this problem is to find out more about the CNN trojan. Try to google for it and see whether others had the same problem and have found a solution. Use part of the text of the notice to search.
Warning

I googled the warning as you suggested. There were several people that had methods of getting rid of, what turned out to be, a "fake alarm" trojan.
I was able to get rid of it with my McAfee, however, I am now left with the warning notice plastered across my desktop. Any advice as to how to get rid of this?
Update:-
I went on to several forums. Unfortunately I was not able to understand much of what they suggested. In the end I downloaded roguefix.txt this seem to do the trick and the notice has disappeared.
I am now going to make a restore point so that I can get back to this point, which is, hopefully, a clean one!!
System Restore

Yes, System Restore can be very useful. My recommendation is to check regularly whether it works, because it has a habit of failing.
I doubt that you have downloaded and used roguefix.txt, but it would be helpful for others if you could post the link of what exactly you downloaded and used.

JB This is what I have got on my roguefix.txt file when I opened it. I don't know what it means but it did seem to get rid of the unwanted warning that was plastered all over my desktop.
