I needed to rebuild my hard drive and have reloaded XP Home edition from CD. I then loaded SP2 without any apparent problems. When I select the reboot to complete the install can only reopen windows in safe mode. I have opted for a system restore point on 3 occasions and reverted to the microsoft site for a solution.
I have searched the knowledge base here and can't find a solution to my problem. I previously installed SP" on the same Home Edition version without problems. Automatic updates have worked just fine, I have tackled potential firewall settings, checked the BIOS by running an intel program and I am now seeking your advice.
I now have a base version of Home edition running without the security updates in place, so can only get on the net at work. AVG requires SP2 as a minimum to operate.
I appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction.
Drivers, Infections, Service Pack 3

My first thought after reading that you installed a fresh copy of Windows XP is that you may have missed at least one driver for the affected computer. Normally you have to download a set of drivers from the manufacturer's web site and install these.
Another possible cause is a virus or worm or adware infection, particularly if the system was connected to the Internet before being patched up. Infection times for unprotected computers are below 60 seconds.
Finally I would recommend to install Service Pack 3, not the obsolete Service Pack 2.
