Auto-update fails

Mon, 2009-06-22 15:15 by Brigham · Forum/category:

I have a problem with a download that refuses to install. Download KB969614 will not install. I have tried various things but sometimes get a 0x80070643 error. When I try to contact microsoft I get an error saying internet explorer won't allow it, something to do with it being unsafe. This download is an update for office 2003. Both Dell and Microsoft seem to be impossible to contact about it. I have a little shield on my systray which will not go away until this download is installed.

First thing I always try when the automatic updates fail is to go to the Microsoft Update web site at http://update.microsoft.com/ and try to select and install that particular patch manually.

If that doesn't work, click on Get help and support on that web site. That page also has a link to the Troubleshooter page. On these pages you can find instructions on how to get the update going after a failure.

Still doesn't install. Tried to get on to help and support but get error message "Internet explorer has blocked this site from using an Active X control in an unsafe manner. As a result this page might not display correctly." I can't get any further than this.

Funny

Microsoft's browser blocking Microsoft's web site—that's funny. It may even be the same problem. Try to read the Get help and support page in another browser if you cannot open this link in Internet Explorer. Install Firefox, if you don't have any other browser already installed.

It appears I have the wrong office for the update. I will fiddle with it to see if I can do anything. I did try the firefox, but although it was faster than explorer it produced a load of offensive pop ups. These are now still there even after uninstalling that browser. I have the pop up blocker on in explorer, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. If I try firefox again I will try to block these before using it.

Popups? Infection?

I hope your browsers or network stack aren't infected with malware. Sounds a little like it.

popups? infection?

I downloaded the ms malicious removal tool and scanned my system. I also scanned with Malwarebytes. No infections were found. My McAfee also gave a clean bill of health. Is there anything else I should do?

Some browsers, like Internet Explorer 8, have a safe mode, in which they do not use any add-ons. You could try that.

If that works better, peruse your add-ons and delete any suspicious ones. Perhaps get a list of the usual add-ons and delete all others.

The only information I have regarding the original problem with the automatic updates is to follow the advice in the comment update.microsoft.com above.

I have reinstalled firefox with no add ons. I have removed the add ons in IE8. Everything seems to be OK at the moment. Once again thanks very much.
