Upgrading to IE 7 problems

Fri, 2009-08-28 00:56 by COLC · Forum/category:

I hope I have posted in the correct area.
I have recently formatted a HP laptop, when I tried to upgrade to IE7 it always fails, Explorer tries to load but immediately disappears, I have restored and tried again several times with same result.
I have an identical laptop that has upgraded successfully.
Does any one have any ideas?

Try Internet Explorer 8

An easy and good alternative is to install Internet Explorer 8, which is the current version. If that also fails, uninstall Internet Explorer altogether, reboot, then install it again.

This is done in Control Panel, Add/remove programs, Add/remove Windows components (icon in the left side bar). Uncheck Internet Explorer, click on OK, and wait for the process to finish. Then reboot and install Internet Explorer 8.

In fact, I don't understand why you tried to install IE7, which is an obsolete version, in the first place.

Good non-Microsoft alternatives are Firefox 3.5 and perhaps the still unripe, experimental Google Chrome.

As to posting in the correct area—no problem, I can move messages easily and moved this one to the Windows forum, because Internet Explorer is still part of Windows (though the European Union wants to change that).

IE 8 full screen mode

I found that IE 8 full screen mode works (F11) but if you call IE from a command prompt or batch file with /k paramert to run full screen... you are stuck till you unplug your power... or wait for a power outage in your area... if you don't know to press the winkey. F11 and Escape does not work... you have a full screen with no taskbar or any option to click on.

Here is an IE Tip from my website http://win7secrets.com

Run several IE windows with specific websites loaded with one click!

Suppose you want to check craigslist.org for jobs in 3 different
categories... or you want to check several message boards for shopping deals on
a daily or weekly basis - or several news sites. There are several steps you
would have to take... for example you could open IE and go to favorites then
select the urls that you had saved and open them in a new tab or window but that
would be over 20 clicks....or you could set up a batch file like this and put it
on your desktop and click once.

START /d "C:\Program Files\internet explorer" iexplore.exe http://mobile.craigslist.org/trp/

START /d "C:\Program Files\internet explorer" iexplore.exe http://mobile.craigslist.org/lab/

START /d "C:\Program Files\internet explorer" iexplore.exe http://mobile.craigslist.org/trd/

Thanks admin, I was just about to reply that I had downloaded IE8 and installed successfully, my reason for trying to download IE7 was to keep it in sync with the other PC and Laptop,
Many Thanks

Upgrade the other computers too

If you want to keep them similar, just upgrade them all to IE8. I've done that too, and IE8 is better than IE7.

By the way, IE8 is now also W3C standards conformant, which is a good thing in my view.
