Browser security

Fri, 2008-11-07 13:05 by macker7963 · Forum/category:

I’ve seen this question asked a few times, but don’t recall ever seeing a definite answer. Is it safe to leave your computer with the web browser open, or can hackers use this open browser to gain control over your computer while you’re not looking? Or does the fact that you have always-on broadband mean that they can get to your computer anytime it’s switched on? Is a computer in hibernation the same as a switched-on computer?

Unable to connect to internet using my xp through another xp machine.

Thu, 2008-10-02 10:40 by apjha · Forum/category:

Hi,
Any help will be appreciated. Here is my problem.

I have 2 windows xp pro system. 1 wireless router and a 4port switch.

I have these 2 xp system connected using the switch (over Ethernet) and 1 of the computer is connected to the wireless router (connected to the internet). I am unable to connect to the internet and take remote control of the system (which is not connected to the system) simultaneously.

If I disable the wireless port I get connected to the other system.

When I enable the lan and enable wireless, I get disconnected from Lan.

Dial up connection has suddenly stopped working

Sun, 2008-09-21 21:57 by bajroly · Forum/category:

Hi,
I used my laptop this afternoon when for some reason the internet stopped working. I have WIndows XP SP2 on my machine and a connection through a WAN miniport (PPPOE).

I tested the connection with the same cable and on an other machine and that was able to connect. So the problem is definitly within my laptop but I couldnt figure out what it is.

I switched off all the virus protection and firewall that might could block the connection, however nothing has changed. I re-installed the connection and checked & cleared the machine for spywares but that didnt help either.

Can not load page

Mon, 2008-09-08 04:50 by dajuad · Forum/category:

Using WinXP I can not load a page using the page name. However, using the IP address the page loads. This is true for firefox and IE7 and for two different networks.
To clarify further, typing www.google.com goes nowheres, typing 64.233.169.99 gets me google. clicking on any search leads to nothing.
Any other computer using the same networks has no problems

KB951748 patch incompatible with ZoneAlarm

Thu, 2008-07-10 17:04 by admin · Forum/category:

Microsoft closed a DNS-related security loophole that has been known since March 2008. The flaw would have allowed malicious hackers to redirect users to fake websites, even if they typed the correct address.

Microsoft's patch was released on 2008-07-08 to automatic updates. But many or all users of Windows 2000 or XP and the popular ZoneAlarm firewall found that they could no longer go online after the patch was installed.

On 2008-07-09 CheckPoint released an update to ZoneAlarm, version 7.0.483, that solves the conflict.

Hi

This has been driving me mad for the past few days........

Scenario: Two PC's both running XP Home Edition, both fully patched. Both connected to ADSL router. Both PC's are networked on a LAN and belong to same workgroup. Both have four or five shared directories all with Allow network users to change my file enabled.

Custom redirection

Tue, 2008-06-17 02:05 by iantheevil · Forum/category:

I was wondering if it were possible to use a GPO to redirect the users' "My Documents" to their home folders but block certain folders such as their "My Music" folder. I don't care too much what they have on their local PC (I'm new to the company and haven't had time to crack down on the users yet :P) but I would like to be able to redirect their personal documents in case of a serious problem. I know I can block their "My Pictures" folder from redirecting but I would like a lilttle more control. I am using a Windows 2003 SBS as the DC and the users are using XP Prof.
